The countryside surrounding Elche is ideal to practice cycling. The wetlands to the south, beaches to the east and mountains to the north make the urban environment an ideal enclave to enjoy cycling.
In addition, the geography of the city of Elche is flat, which make it ideally suited for moving around along the cycle lanes which traverse the city centre. A bicycle rental service greatly facilitates this option.
Several of the villages around the Elche countryside are served by cycle lanes. El Hondo Nature Reserve, a wetland of great ecological and landscape value, may be crossed by bike. In the city centre, the Palm Grove trail runs through almost three kilometres of very pleasant palm groves, while it is possible to reach the archaeological site of La Alcudia by following a cycle lane.
Unión Ciclista Ilicitana conducts regular excursions and provides information about the different cycle routes which exist in the city and its surrounding areas. In addition, it has a school of cycling which offers classes for children from 8 to 14 years old.
Bike Aventura Elx Sports Club specialises in mountain biking. They organise excursions with different levels of difficulty, the most important being la Marcha de las Vías del Tren, a journey of 153 kilometres from the town of Potríes (Gandía, Alicante) to Elche, following the route of the disused railway. An event that takes place every year, it has been gaining popularity and currently some 500 people participate in it. It takes place on the last weekend of the month of May.
