Living Nativity, in the heart of the Elche palm grove

|

4th, Dec

If you are in Elche during Christmas, we suggest you visit the Living Nativity, located in the heart of the palm grove, an incomparable setting where both typical biblical passages and numerous scenes depicting the way of life in the year 1 AD are represented.

The Historical-Artistic Association “Pobladores de Elche” was founded in 1979 during the patron saint festivities of our city with the intention of promoting the classical cultures that passed through the Spanish Levant, such as Iberian, Roman, Greek, Carthaginian, Phoenician, Visigothic cultures, among others. This is achieved through various forms, including theatrical performances, historical reenactments, parades, and during Christmas, the organization of the Living Nativity. The nativity is located in the Palmeral de Elche, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000.

The space is divided into three areas:

  • The first one is the Roman zone, featuring a military camp. The palace of Herod is also here, where the king is with his concubines, his personal guard, and the censors responsible for knowing who inhabits the city and collecting taxes.
  • The second zone is set in a typical street in Bethlehem from the year 1. It includes a market with a teahouse, a grill, fabric stalls, and an inn.
  • Lastly, the most emblematic zone is the manger, where the Nativity scene is accompanied by a cow and a mule.

In addition to these scenes, there are three performances in which all the actors participate, giving them greater theatrical weight. These performances include the Arrival of the Holy Family, the Birth of Jesus, the Massacre of the Holy Innocents, the Arrival of the Wise Men from the East, and the Adoration of Jesus.

Schedule:

  • December 25th: Inauguration of the Living Nativity by “Pobladores” from 12:00 to 13:45.
  • December 29th: Performance of the “Massacre of the Holy Innocents” at 12:30 and 18:30.
  • December 30th: Tasting of sweet wine at the Living Nativity from 12:30 to 18:30.
